About our Grape Varieties
Nandroya specialises in just two grape varities.Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc
Pinot
Noir:
This is the grape that makes Burgandy famous and Tasmania
is quickly becoming the premium wine growing for Pinot Noir in
the southern hemisphere.
Apart from being quite challanging to
grow and ripen in cool climate regions its qualities come from just
that challange. Cool nights and a long ripening season enhance the
flavours of the resulting wine.
Pinot Noir is versatile as well...
It is the main variety, along with Chardony, of classic sparkling
wines. When Pinot Noir is crushed and not allowed to stay in contact
with the skins, the resulting juice is clear....So when the quality is
high,it's a difficult decision to know what style to make from Pinot
Noir!
Sauvignon Blanc:
This too isa classic French variety which has gained in popularity over more recent years.
The important difference when Savignon Blanc is grown in Tasmania is the cool climate.
New Zealand showed the world the capabilities of the variety.
Nandroya
's Savignon Blanc was planted in 1990 when it was not as popular as it
is today and in recent vintages has developed a unique flavour profile.
The
vintage is determined by the flavour of the grapes and in some years
this will be coupled with high acid. It's evidenced in years like 2004
when acid was high and alcohol was low(10%) and yet it is still
drinking well.
Wine Making:
This is done off site by contract wine makers Alain Rousseau and Nick Glaetzer.
Alain
Rousseau; Alain hails from an old vigneron family in Vallet of the
Loire Valley region of France. He was formally trained at the
prestigious Dijon University of Burgandy.
In 1991 Alain and his wife moved to Tasmania, imparting his French heritage to Nandroya wines.
Nick
Glaetzer: Nick also comes with a long family involvement in wine
making. Growing up in Glaetzer Wines in the Barossa, and after Uni has
done vintages in both Australia and Burgandy. In Tasmania since 2006,
his focus for Nandroya is to maximise the quality of our wine.
